GENESIS 4:25-5:17
(Book study series - Genesis) Message no.19

Introduction:
  • Since Abel, the godliest son had been murdered by his own brother Cain, and Cain, the eldest son, had turned his back entirely on God as fugitive and vagabond, therefore, as parents, Adam and Eve, undoubtedly must have been totally distraught, worried and perplexed.
  • Adam and Eve, as parents experienced a very sad family story not only because they physically had lost a son (Abel) but sadly they also spiritual lost a son. (Cain).

PROPOSITION: GOD WILL STILL PRODUCE HIS RIGHTEOUS LINEAGE EVEN IN THE MIDST OF A CORRUPT WORLD.

  • In this bible story, God gave life to a baby named Seth. Through Seth, Noah comes and then eventually followed by Abram who would come.

I – The Established Righteous Lineage – Genesis 4:26

  • After the death of Abel, God’s righteous lineage is established by God.

Genesis 4:25 “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”

  • The name of the son is called “Seth” which means to “put”, or “place” or “set.” Since Seth becomes a substitute for or takes the place of Abel, so the name Seth is fitted. In addition, the promised seed, that Messiah would come through Seth. The birth of Seth was not like as what Cain did for self-glorification that is during Cain’s construction of the city which was named after his son, and that is purposely to give his son honor according to Genesis 4:17, but Adam and Eve rather give glory to God as their response to the birth of Seth.
  • In verse 25 we see the word “appointed”, it comes from the same root word as of the name Seth which means to set or to place something in a royalty position. The righteous seed whom Adam and Eve longed for would come through the line of Seth. This righteous seed would crush Satan’s head.

Some applications for us to learn:

  1. To remind that parents can produce godless children even they are may be godly parents.
  2. To receive the blessing of God in the family that godly parents will see.
  3. To refrain from exalting themselves for their accomplishments is like Cain.
  4. To remain exalting God for God’s accomplishment is like Adam and Eve.
  5. To realize that in the midst of godlessness God can still raise up godliness.

II – The Emphasis of the Righteous Lineage – Genesis 4:26

  • We are blessed to know that Set’s son was a righteous man and God’s righteous lineage begins to focus on God.
  • The Emphasis of the righteous lineage begins and that is to focus on God.

Genesis 4:26 “And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.”

Genesis 4:26 “Nagkaanak din si Set ng isang lalaki, at tinawag ang kanyang pangalan na Enos. Nang panahong iyon ang mga tao ay nagsimulang tumawag sa pangalan ng Panginoon.”

  • Enos was the name called to a born son of Seth. The name Enos means common man. We noticed that in the lineage of Enos, there are no credits to any concerning spectacular inventions or world’s success unlike of the lineage of Cain through Lamech that they are recognized by the temporary success in this world. Enos by the world’s standards have been a common man, nothing about big thing to talk to, but by God’s standards and in God’s sight, Enos the son of Seth was a righteous man. Notice in verse 26 the word “and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord,” that means the righteous lineage begins to focus on the Lord. That is the main emphasis to focus on the Lord.

Three different meaning of the idea calling “upon the name of the LORD”:

  1. Calling upon the name of the LORD means they prayed to God
  2. Calling upon the name of the LORD means they worshipped God (Genesis 12:18; Genesis 13:4l; Genesis 21:23
  3. Calling upon the name of the LORD means they testified for God.
  • Look at the big difference between the firstborn son of Cain and the firstborn son of Seth. Cain firstborn produced or build city and discovered and invented arts while Seth’s firstborn produced worship and godly line.
  • Interestingly, we conclude that the focus on world’s temporary success was took off and the real glorifying success put back to God by the godly lineage of Seth, it says people starts “to call upon the name of the Lord” in verse 26.

III – The Expanded Righteous Lineage - Genesis 5:1-32

  • According to God’s sovereign will, God’s righteous lineage is preserved and developed and expanded by God.
  • Three reasons for the righteous lineage in Chapter 5:
  1. Evidence of how God considered the lineage of human history significant
  2. Establish the promise from which the righteous seed would come from the righteous lineage
  3. Exhibit the power of death that even the righteous line was reigned over by it.
  1.  The Exclusiveness in God’s image that God created Adam – Genesis 5:1-2
  • No other creature like man created in the image and likeness of God. God in His image created Adam.

Genesis 5:1-2 “This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.”

  • The Bible clearly says Adam was created by God in God’s image.

Two reasons why God in His image created Adam:

1) The world did not look like the image of God
2) The world has taken over by death curse.

B.    The Estimated Calculation on the lineage of Adam – Genesis 5:6-32

  • By His omniscience attribute, God calculated the lineage of Adam
  • Through God’s plan Adam’s lineage is calculated by God through the line of Seth and not through the line of Cain.
  • We know the narrative account that the living lineage is that of Cain because Abel is already dead, however it is that of Seth whom God considers the living lineage not Cain. The people from the line of Seth according to the estimated calculation of God is the only line that is significant.
  1. The Experience of the Adam’s lineage created in the image of Adam – Genesis 5:3
  • Let us take a look what happened when God created Adam’s lineage in the image of Adam.
  • Everyone died because Adam’s lineage is reproduced in the image of Adam.

Genesis 5:3 “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth:”

Genesis 5:3 “Nabuhay si Adan ng isandaan at tatlumpung taon, at nagkaanak ng isang lalaki na kanyang wangis, ayon sa kanyang larawan, at tinawag ang kanyang pangalan na Set.”

  • Although we know that in the image of God man was created by God, but on the other hand in the image of Adam the lineage of Adam was created.  That is the reason why all men except Enoch, died. All men were born with the sinful nature of Adam, all men had the image of Adam and that sinful image of Adam is greatly distorted or marred from the image of a holy God.
  1. The Endowment of a long life to the lineage of Adam – Genesis 5:3-32
  • The gracious LORD God granted long life to the lineage of Adam.
  • It was a blessing from God that Adam’s lineage is granted long life by God.
  • How God granted long life to the lineage of Adam:
  1. People were blessed with long lives granted by God
  2. People still died after granted a long life by God.
  1. The Ending through death to the lineage of Adam – Genesis 5:3-32
  • Consequently, the Sovereign God allows death to the lineage of Adam.
  • This is the reality that Adam’s lineage eventually died
  • This chapter 5 of Genesis made “death” as the key theme. It was in found in Genesis 5:5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 27, 31.

Actually, when we walk through Genesis chapter 5, it is like walking through a cemetery. It is a reality, with the exception of Enoch, that everyone in the lineage of Adam personally experienced the sentence of death. Every human being was followed, pursued, and tracked down by the curse of death.

In Genesis 5:5, at the age of 930 Adam died
In Genesis 5:6-8, at the age of 912 Seth died
In Genesis 5:9-11, at the age of 905 Enosh died
In Genesis 5: 12-14, at the age of 910 Kenan died
In Genesis 5:15-17, at the age of 895 Mahalalel died
In Genesis 5:18-20, at the age of 962 Jared died
In Genesis 5:25-27, at the age of 969 Methuselah died
In Genesis 5:28-31, at the age of 777 Lamech died
All these characters, all these people who live long, all of them died.
  • It does not matter what shape our bodily condition we are in, it does not matter how long we live, one thing is sure we all caught up by the death curse and we will be followed into our respective grave by all that we have done, by all our efforts and even by our personal faith. Therefore, let us follow what the Apostle Paul said, “to live is Christ to die is gain (Philippians 1:21) and Paul said to the Corinthians “And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again” (II Corinthians 5:15).
  • Listen carefully, we are so thankful for the grace and mercy of God, that God purposely developed and maintained the godly lineage of Seth. God expanded and extended that godly lineage up to the promised seed and that is Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, the second Adam could come into this world to redeem us from wages of all our sins (Romans 5:8-17) that whosoever trust Jesus Christ the only Savior might be saved and received the  gift of eternal life. We might be made the righteousness of God in Christ (II Corinthians 5:21).
  • The righteousness of God can be ours by grace through faith on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. Thanks for the Righteous lineage expanded. Amen!!
