GENESIS 5:18-32
(Book study series – Genesis) Message no. 20
July 4, 2021 - SUN a.m.
- We find out the names of Enoch and Noah appeared in the faith chapter of Hebrews 11 (Hebrews 11:5, 7); and both Enoch and Noah walked with God (Genesis 5:24; Genesis 6:9); and were both spared destructions also. The statement “walked with God” gives us an idea that both Enoch and Noah lived a life enjoying a close fellowship with God. Enoch and Noah walked with God.
PROPOSITION: THERE ARE SPECIAL THINGS GOD WILL DO AND SPECIAL REWARDS GOD WILL GIVE TO THOSE WHO CLOSELY WALKED WITH GOD.
- God blesses those who have proper relationship with God whom God use and blesses as they walked closely with God.
I – RIGHTEOUS LINEAGE OF ENOCH AND NOAH – v.3
Genesis 5:3, 24 “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth: 24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.”
- Both Enoch and Noah were in the family of the righteous lineage of Seth, which is the lineage who love God and obviously not in the lineage of Cain, which is the lineage who loved the world. Precisely, the Genesis chapter 5 genealogy which is the lineage of people who meant something for God is repeatedly mentioned in I Chronicles 1:1-4 and Luke 3:38-29.
- Jared was the father of Enoch according to Genesis 5:18 while Lamech was the father of Noah according to
Genesis 5:28-29. There is nothing much to say about Jared, however there are few things known concerning Lamech:
- In Genesis 4:19-24, there is total opposite, or great difference between the Lamech that is in the line of Cain and the Lamech that is in the line of Seth.
- In Genesis 5:29, Lamech maintain a great focus on God and Lamech called Noah as the one who could comfort or give rest from the ground which the Lord has cursed and also the promise of deliverance on the coming promise seed through the Savior Jesus Christ according to Genesis 3:15.
- Now, the question, how does anyone today get into the right line? Anyone could get into a right line by being born again. People need to have spiritual birth, the second birth (John 3:3-6). By repenting from their sins and totally believing, trusting, relying, by faith on Jesus Christ as the Savior, they will be born into the family of God (John 3:15-18, 36) (John 1:12, Galatians 3:26).
II – RIGHTEOUS WALK OF ENOCH AND NOAH – v.22; 6:9
Genesis 5:22 “And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:”
Genesis 6:9 “These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.”
- Enoch and Noah are men who lived before the flood (antediluvians) the both “walked with God.”
- Interestingly, the reference of the righteous walk is not said of any other who are in the line of Seth except for these two men Enoch and Noah possessed this very unique quality.
- The phrase “walked with God” indicates righteous living into all areas of life that is approved and acceptable in the sight of God in such a way that person can have a personal intimate and close fellowship with God. Living all areas of life in the way of God is what walking with God means.
- Do not assume that walking with God is just a quick relationship. No it is not because even Enoch maintained walking with God for 300 years according to Genesis 5:22 and Noah maintained walking with God for many hundred of years. It is very significant to maintain walking with God. Maintain step by step, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, year by year, keep walking with God. God did very special things and bestowed many wonderful blessings unto Enoch and Noah because they both continued and consistently walked with God no matter what, whatever the cost. Don’t out of focus, do not be distracted, do not quit, keep on walking with God and God had special thing to do and wonderful blessing to give you. Keep walking with the Lord.
III – RIGHTEOUS FAITH OF ENOCH AND NOAH – Hebrews 11:5,7
Hebrews 11:5-7 “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.”
- We notice because of great and tremendous faith of these two quality men of God, they were included in the list of the hall of fame in faith chapter of Hebrews 11. Enoch and Noah do not have stagnant or dead faith but instead both of these two godly men have an active and alive faith. In the midst of insulting, mocking, distracting and wicked world, they obeyed God sacrificially and unconditionally and they stand alone for God whatever the price. According to the book of Hebrews concerning the faith of Enoch and Noah it was said: that First, in Hebrews 11:3, Enoch and Noah believed the creation of God; second, in Hebrews 11:6, Enoch and Noah both believed that God will reward those who diligently seek God.
- In the in spite the world mocked what they are doing for God they keep on trusting God and they keep on obeying the Word and will of God, ready to count the cost, they were never been distracted to live for God.
IV – RIGHTEOUS TESTIMONY OF ENOCH AND NOAH – Hebrews 11:5; Jude 14-15; II Peter 2:5
Hebrews 11:5 “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”
Jude 14-15 “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
II Peter 2:5 “And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;”
- As they walked with God, Enoch and Noah lives as a shining testimony for the living God. Their lives is a living testimony for God, they both testified for God. Look the words in Jude 14 “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied…” here we can see that Enoch was the first prophet considered by the Jewish fathers. Even in the next phrase of Jude 14 “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousand of his saints,” here it signifies that Enoch may been the first writer who wrote various subjects on theology. Enoch preaching is about the coming judgment to ungodly deeds of the ungodly sinners in this ungodly world according Jude 15. Enoch preaching has to do with theological doctrine on the subject of the coming judgment of God. Not only Enoch was considered by Jewish fathers as first prophet but also Enoch was the first theological and doctrinal writer.
- Notice II Peter 2:5 “…Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness,” this described that Noah was the eight preacher of righteousness from Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Methuselah and then Noah. We learned that Enoch’s father outlived Enoch (Genesis 5:19) because Enoch was raptured 435 years before Jared his father died and Lamech’s father outlived Lamech (Genesis 5:26) because Lamech died five years before Methuselah his father died. In other words, there were only seven men in the line before Noah taught to preach the Word of God, so the number eight preacher is Noah. As for the patriarch of God who proclaimed the Word of God and his righteousness, they were only eight in existence during that time from Adam to Noah.
- In Jude 14, Enoch was a prophet of God and II Peter 2:5, Noah was a preacher of righteousness. In spite of insults, mockery, they both faithfully proclaimed the truth of God.
- In Hebrews 11:15, Enoch was raptured by God and this happened when he was only 365 years old (Genesis 5:23-24). Thus, Enoch did not see death but was taken up to glory. Before this rapture happened, every person died.
- The rapture of God to Enoch happened half way between the time of Adam and the flood, it means those wicked people who were left have a chance to repent of their sin but they did not repent of their sin, they are hard hearted in spite they are discussing what happened to Enoch. Did you see the point? God raptured first Enoch to show His mercy and grace before God poured out His wrath of judgment to this unrepentant world. That is exactly what will happened for all believers in Christ in this grace dispensation. In Thessalonians 4:13-18, Paul speaks about the blessed hope when Christ comes in the air to rapture all who are in Christ before tribulation comes, before God pours out His wrath upon this earth.
- The world was destroyed by flood and Noah was saved because of his faithfulness. In I Peter 3:20-21 the New Testament Spirit baptism was pictured the reality that we are living in this evil world, and since we as believers in Christ we were all baptized into Jesus Christ, we will never experience the terrible wrath of God.
- It is clear that the Believers in Christ in the New Testament were already been delivered from the wrath of God as Paul said in I Thessalonians 5:9 “For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,”. Every believer in Christ will be translated at the rapture of the church, that is what Paul had said in I Corinthians 15:51 “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,” Not all every believer in Christ “walks with God”, not all believers, saved by the gospel of Christ were faithful and have a close fellowship with God when the rapture occurs. Are you ready for the coming of Christ? Jesus will surely come as He promised but at the moment you don’t know, it is imminent.
