Introduction: Today we are just going to tackle the one of some results of the salvation. This is called Justification.
Five Principle results of our salvation.
I- JUSTIFICATION
“Justification is not only one of the great benefits of the death of Christ but is also a cardinal doctrine of Christianity because it distinguishes it as a religion of grace and faith. And grace and faith are the cornerstones of the doctrine of justification.” - Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Basic Theology (Chicago, Ill.: Moody Press, 1999), 343.
A. THE POINT OF JUSTIFICATION
1. Definition of “Justify” (means to declare righteous)
2. Decision of the Judge
Hebrew (sadaq) and Greek (dikaioo) mean “to announce or pronounce a favorable verdict” – Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Basic Theology (Chicago, Ill.: Moody Press, 1999), 343.
3. Demonstration of Judgement
An Illustration of a Trial in a courtroom (Deuteronomy 25:1; 1 Kings 8:32; Proverbs 17:15)
Deuteronomy 25:1 “If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgement, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.”
1 Kings 8:32 “Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.”
Proverbs 17:15 “He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord.”
• The verdicts of the trial court only pronounces on the basis of someone else’s righteousness. Think of this, can the jury’s decision of guilty make a criminal wicked? Then the Jury’s decision of righteous does not make a sinner righteous.
B. THE PROBLEM OF JUSTIFICATION
1. Officiating Judge – The Righteous God (Genesis 18:25; Deuteronomy 32:4; 2 Timothy 4:8)
• Who is the Righteous Judge? God is the righteous judge who justifies
Genesis 18:25 “That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
Deuteronomy 32:4 “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”
2 Timothy 4:8 “Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
2. Obstacle in Justifying – The Righteous God as Judge justify sinners
• How can the Righteous judge justify sinners? If God is righteous, how can he justify sinners? (Job 9:2)
Job 9:2 “I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?”
3. Options – The Righteous God choices in judging unrighteous sinners
• What are the options of the Righteous judge toward unrighteous sinners? There are three options for the righteous judge with unrighteous sinners:
a. Condemn
b. Compromise [become unrighteous himself]
c. Condemned not: [freed or justified]
Charles Ryrie comments: “But any righteousness the sinner has must be actual, not fictitious; real, not imagined; acceptable by God’s standards, and not a whit short.” - Charles Caldwell Ryrie, Basic Theology (Chicago, Ill.: Moody Press, 1999), 344.
C. THE PROCEDURE IN JUSTIFICATION (Romans 3:21-26)
1. Sovereign Plan of God (v.21; Acts 13:39)
• Righteousness of God according to the ‘without-Law’ plan of God.
Romans 3:21 “But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;”
Acts 13:39 “And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
2. Simple faith in Christ (v.22)
• The Righteousness of God can be accomplished through faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 3:22 “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:”
John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
3. The Shedding Blood of Christ (v.24 -25)
• Justification is granted by God’s grace at the cost of Christ’s blood.
Romans 3:24-25 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”
4. Substitution of Christ to sinners (2 Corinthians 5:21)
• Sinners ‘made the righteousness of God in him
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
5. Sinner's Justifier (v.26)
• Makes God just in justifying sinners – He must justify sinners who are in Christ.
Romans 3:26 “To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”
D. THE PROOF OF JUSTIFICATION
1. Declaration of Freedom from sin (Romans 6:7)
• Justification is proven by freedom from sin (‘freed’ means ‘justified’)
Romans 6:7 “For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
2. Demonstration by works of faith (James 2:24)
• Justification is demonstrated by works of faith. Works is the evidence of faith.
James 2:24 “Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.”
James 2:18 “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.”
3. Dwelled Peace with God (Romans 5:1)
• Justification by faith a person have the Presence of peace with God. We are no longer enemies of God, but we are reconciled to God through His Son.
Romans 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
