Three Speakers of the Cross
Matthew 27:45-53
April 17, 2019 WED p.m.
I- The Message of the Creation (v. 45, 51-53)
     A.  Creation says that God is angry toward Sin (v. 45)
v.45 “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.”
  • That darkness all over Israel signifies of the Judgment of God toward sins.
Isaiah 59:2 “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
     B.  Creation says that God is appeased by His Son (v.  51-53)
v.51- 53 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”
  • We can learn that creation revealed that there is God’s wrath against the sins of the whole world.  And no one is excuse but all are accountable.
Romans 1:18-20 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
Psalm 19:1-4 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,”
  • Christ is the propitiation for all the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:2 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

II- The Message of the Crowd (v. 47-49)
     A. The Crowd says that they are uncertain of Christ Identity (v. 47-48)
v. 47- 48 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.”
  • The crowds are unsure who really Christ is.
  • Many of today’s religious groups have different false and wrong beliefs about Christ deity and humanity.
John 1:10-11 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
     B. The Crowd says that they were unaffected of Christ sacrifice (v. 49)
v. 50 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. 50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”
Matthew 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”
  • Let us always be patient with the lost. The Lost were unmoved and not concern of Christ sacrifice.
Luke 23:47-49 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. 48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. 49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.”
  • Here are some description of the lost and we have enough reason why we should be patient with them:
1. “blinded”- 2 Corinthians 4:4;
2. “fool”- Luke 12:20-21
3. “understanding darkened being alienated from the life of God” – Ephesians 4:18
4. “children of disobedience”- Ephesians 2:2, Ephesians 5:6
5. “men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth”- 1 Timothy 6:5
6. “their father is the devil, and the lusts of their father they will do.”-John 8:44
III- The Message of Christ (v. 46 & 50)
     A.  Christ says that He comprehend with our inner feelings  (v. 46; Psalm 22)
v.46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Psalm 22:1 “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?”
  • Christ understand well our experiences of rejection, loneliness and pain.
Hebrews 4:15 “ For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
     B. Christ says that He completed the Redemption for our total forgiveness (v. 50; Luke 23:46; John 19:30)
v.50Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”
Luke 23:46 “And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.”
John 19:30 “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
  • Christ offers to sinners to accept the total forgiveness and direct access offered by Christ.
Ephesians 1:7 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”)
Titus 3:5 “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
Ephesians 2:8-9For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Romans 5:8-10 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." - Christ is our access
