TRUTH OF CHRISTMAS
JOHN 1:1-14
(December 18, 2019 – WED p.m. – MBC baesa)
Introduction
• The ignorance and obliteration of Christian significance of Christmas was evident in the secular world of our present generation.
→ For decades many people, advertising companies, marketing products, stores and malls giving and wishing the public by the phrase “Happy holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas”
→ Some Christians who celebrate the real meaning of Christmas give emphasis on the manger and the baby in the manger, Joseph and Mary, the animals, the shepherds, and the wise men visit.
• However, we should always focus ourselves of the valuable truth of the Christmas scene that God came to this earth in the human flesh (John 1:14)
→ Jesus is God, Messiah, Lord, King, Almighty, more than just a baby lying in a manger in Bethlehem.
→ Jesus the creator of universe and the very Son of God, left the splendors of heaven to come to this earth manifested in the flesh to accomplish the perfect plan of the Heavenly Father by suffering and dying on cross for the salvation and redemption of all sinners.
• We hope this truth of Christmas become a great impact in our personal lives.
I- THE TRUTH ABOUT DEITY OF CHRIST THE SAVIOR
• Christmas is more about the deity of Christ than it is about the infancy of Christ.
• The humble birth of the Savior Jesus Christ was purposely to stress to point that God provides salvation for His people and not to cover up the reality that God born into the world.
A. Prophecy of Isaiah 7:14
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
• Three information’s explained on this prophecy:
1. Indication: A sign is given by the Lord Himself
2. Involvement: A virgin birth is involved in this sign
3. Identification: Immanuel which means "God with us" is the name called to a son born of the virgin.
Matthew 1:20-24 “But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:”
→ This was a calming message revealed by an angel to Joseph to ease his mind since he thinks how it could be and what to do about his espoused fiancé or wife that was a fulfillment prophecy of Isaiah 7:14.
• These are the things the angel reveals:
1. Eternal Power: That which was conceived in Mary was of the Holy Ghost – v.20
a) Messenger: The Lord Himself was the author of this – v.22
b) Miracle: Mary was still a virgin – v. 23
2. Eternal Purpose: “Jesus” was His name, means “Savior”, He shall save His people from their sin! (God visiting man, only God could do that) – v.21
B. Prophecy in Isaiah 9:6
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
• The widespread behavior of the world attempts to hide the true purpose of Christmas. Behind all of this lies is the devil.
→ Comments with human view based statements:
“Christmas is that everybody need peace on earth and loving everybody”
“Christmas is all about giving”
→ Correction for these wrong statements:
No peace on earth until Jesus comes back and sets up earthly Kingdom then puts down all other authority as He reigns.
No peace in one’s heart until that person personally trust or believed Jesus as Savior and be the Lord means submission to Christ the ruler and author of life.
Yes, Christmas is about giving but not about us giving, but it is about God the Father who gave His only begotten Son to the world to be the Savior of all sinners in the world – John 3:16
II- THE TRUTH ABOUT HUMANITY OF CHRIST THE SAVIOR
• Contrary to man’s thinking is the idea of God becoming a man as a baby in a manger.
• The word incarnation does not occur in the Bible. It is derived from the Latin in and caro (flesh), meaning clothed in flesh, the act of assuming flesh. Its only use in theology is in reference to that gracious, voluntary act of the Son of God in which He assumed a human body.
→ In Christian doctrine the Incarnation, briefly stated, is that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became a man. It is one of the greatest events to occur in the history of the universe.
→ The Apostle Paul wrote, ''And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was MANIFEST IN THE FLESH . . . " - I Timothy 3:16
• The world find hard to comprehend how the Almighty humbling Himself to become a man or condescending to becoming a tiny infant in the location where Jesus was born.
→ Man wrong thinking. “that is not what god’s do”
Correction: There are no gods. There is just one true God manifested in three persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) That has been the plan of God before the world began.
Isaiah 44:6 “Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
Isaiah 45:5 “I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:”
• World’s thinking cannot comprehend how much the miracle of incarnation could happen, neither can understand clearly the salvation purpose of the Almighty and cannot even conceive all that was part when God manifested in the flesh.
Isaiah 55:6-11 “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”
• The Lord God almighty, Jesus came into the world as an infant without forsaking or diminishing His divinity.
→ The Lord Jesus Christ was cared for and reared as any child, He therefore experienced all the needs and emotions of every human being, beside He observe the law entirely and kept all the commandments in spirit as well as in the letter because He was in His full humanity.
Hebrews 4:15 “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
• Jesus Christ paid fully the penalty of those who violate any part of the law as the law demanded.
• Jesus Christ was omniscient and omnipotent in His deity.
• The Bible clearly teaches the truth of the person of Christ, He is the GOD-MAN.
→ Man is unable to comprehend is because man has limited concept of God.
• The Divine purpose in the Incarnation is recorded in John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
→ Cerinthus, a representative of the system which arose in the early church under the name of Docetism, claimed that our Lord had only an apparent human body. But the statement, “the Word became flesh,” indicates that He had a real body.
→ Our text John 1:14 cannot be fully appreciated apart from John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”…John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh” or became flesh.
→ Jesus who was one with the Father from all eternity became Man, taking upon Him a human body.
Son “was with God” (v.1); Son “became flesh” (v.14)
Son “was with God” (v.1); Son “dwelt among us” (v.14)
→ From the infinite position of eternal Godhood to the finite limitations of manhood. Unthinkable but true
• Apostle Paul writes significant passage to establish the truth of Incarnation in Galatians 4:4-5 “But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”
III- THE TRUTH ABOUT HUMILITY OF CHRIST THE SAVIOR
• Jesus voluntarily laid aside the full application and independent use of His Divine attributes during His incarnation.
Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
A. Voluntary Subjection to the Father’s Will
John 5:30 “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”
John 6:38 “For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”
B. Valuable Scriptural Fact of His Deity
• The most important truth is the deity of Jesus Christ.
1. Various errors of Cults about Jesus:
→ Many theories make Jesus less than who really He is like: He is one of many gods, a great teacher, prophet, high angel, but not God in the flesh.
2. Valid explanation that Christ Jesus is God.
→ The Bible very clearly teaches that Jesus is God
John 1:1, 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
3. View of Enemies that Christ is claiming to be God
→ Undoubtedly, the enemies of Christ said that Jesus was claiming to be God.
John 10:30-33 “I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”
IV- THE TRUTH ABOUT DEPENDENCY OF CHRIST SALVATION
• Bible Salvation is dependent upon both the humanity and deity of Christ.
A. Fundamental of Jesus Humanity
→ Without Christ humanity He could not have faced temptation for man and not have been the last Adam.
1 Corinthians 15:45 “And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”
B. Fact of Jesus Deity
→ If Jesus Christ is not God, the teaching of the Scriptures is wrong
→ If Jesus Christ is less than God He could not paid and could not suffered an infinite death for all sins of the whole world.
Conclusion:
• Jesus asked His disciples about who He is – Matthew 16:13-18
→ Who is Jesus Christ to you?
A. Do you believe that it is Jesus who died for your sins?
John 3:18 “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
B. Do you trust that it is Jesus who can pay your debt for sin?
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
